I was taught that my prince would come, and he would be a lawyer, and I would have his children. And on the weekends we would barbecue. And all the other princes and their princesses would come, and they would say, “Delicious, delicious.” Oh, how boring.

Like, one of the things I forgot to say is that your world can be as similar or different from our society as you want. Race can matter as little or much as you want. Gender can matter as little or much as you want. All the social issues that we deal with in real life can totally exist in your setting, but hey guy, don’t be a dick about it. Talk to your players to see what they’re wanting to get out of the game to make sure you’re going to be able to incorporate that, or else to advise them to play a different character. My first ever character hinged on the fact that people were kinda racist against orcs and the story worked without anybody being terrible about it. But social issues can be difficult, and talking as a group is the best way to deal with them for a campaign. Don’t include a one dimensional race that’s a poor representation of a real life minority group. Don’t make people feel uncomfortable if they want to play an NB or trans character. The game is supposed to be fun, first and foremost, and you don’t have to include real life prejudices.
